A company planning to convert a former library in Hoylake, Wirral into a gym has issued an apology following backlash over comments made in a planning document. The comments suggested a nearby bench, reportedly popular with local alcoholics, was not in line with the firm’s brand image.
Nomad, the firm behind the gym proposal, clarified that the offensive remarks, which appeared in a document submitted to Wirral Council, were written by a third-party consultant and did not reflect the company’s views or values. The document had sparked local outcry by stating the removal of the bench and nearby street trees would better suit the business’s image, although it was not necessary for the project’s approval.
The bench, which holds a dedication plaque and is a focal point for community decorations such as remembrance snowflakes during Christmas, became the center of a petition signed by over 1,400 people. The petition opposed the suggested removals and defended the community value of the bench and trees.
Responding to the controversy, Nomad took to Facebook to assure the public that the trees were never intended to be removed. They also expressed a commitment to not only retaining the bench but also restoring it as part of their efforts to promote physical and mental well-being in the community.
Philip Barton, the planning consultant responsible for the document, admitted to the BBC that his choice of words was poor and the mention of the bench and trees was speculative, meant only for consideration in a possible separate legal agreement. Barton acknowledged that he should have been more careful with his language.
Nomad emphasized their goal to create a harmonious space that contributes positively to the community, distancing themselves further from the controversial remarks made in the planning application.
