For example, in a supported child’s pose or reclining bound angle pose, the bolster supports the torso or back so that the body can surrender without strain.

Yin yoga, while still passive, targets the connective tissues and fascia. Poses are held for long durations to encourage deep release and flexibility. In these cases, a bolster provides gentle pressure and support, enabling the practitioner to ease into the posture and maintain it with minimal effort. The bolster helps reduce muscular engagement, allowing gravity and time to do the work.

By reducing the need for muscle activation, a yoga bolster allows for a more meditative and inward-focused experience. The nervous system shifts into a parasympathetic state—known as “rest and digest”—which enhances recovery, reduces stress, and supports emotional well-being.

How to Use a Bolster in Common Yoga Poses

A yoga bolster can be used in a wide variety of poses, transforming the experience of each one. In a reclined hero pose (Supta Virasana), the bolster can be placed along the spine to support the back and allow the chest to open without discomfort. In a supported forward fold (Paschimottanasana), placing the bolster on the legs and folding forward onto it makes the stretch gentler and more accessible.

Another favorite use of the bolster is in supported bridge pose (Setu Bandhasana). Rather than lifting the hips using muscle strength, you can slide the bolster underneath the sacrum and rest there, enjoying a passive backbend. This allows the lower back to decompress and encourages energy flow through the spine without strain.

Bolsters also aid in meditation and pranayama (breathing exercises). Sitting on a bolster in a cross-legged position elevates the hips above the knees, which reduces strain on the lower back and encourages better spinal alignment. When used under the knees in savasana (corpse pose), the bolster relieves tension in the lower back and promotes total relaxation.

Choosing the Right Bolster for Your Needs

Yoga bolsters come in different shapes, sizes, and firmness levels. The two most common shapes are rectangular and cylindrical. Rectangular bolsters offer a flatter surface and are great for supporting the back in reclining poses. Cylindrical bolsters are more rounded and can provide deeper chest opening or be used under the knees for enhanced comfort.

When choosing a bolster, consider the type of yoga you practice most often. If restorative or prenatal yoga is your focus, a rectangular bolster may be more practical. If you’re looking for something to aid deeper stretches or backbends, a cylindrical bolster could be better suited. The weight and material of the bolster also matter. Some are lightweight for easy transport, while others are denser for stronger support.

Covers should be removable and washable, as the bolster will absorb sweat and body oils over time. Eco-friendly and organic options are also available for those who prefer sustainable choices. It’s worth investing in a quality bolster, as it will be a long-term companion in your yoga journey.

The Emotional and Mental Benefits of Bolster Support

The benefits of a yoga bolster go beyond the physical. Using a bolster in your practice creates a sense of safety and support that extends to the emotional realm. When your body feels secure and at ease, your mind is more likely to let go of stress, anxiety, and tension. You don’t have to dedicate an hour each time. Even 10–15 minutes of supported poses can create a significant shift in your body and mind.

Consider starting or ending your yoga session with one or two bolster-supported poses. These moments of stillness provide an anchor and can set the tone for your day or promote rest before sleep. If you’re short on time, choose one restorative pose to hold for a few minutes and focus on deep breathing.
