In a heartfelt tribute to fallen military heroes, Driftless CrossFit in Onalaska hosted a special Memorial Day event by completing the demanding “Murph Challenge,” a workout created to honor Navy SEAL Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, who was killed in action during the Afghanistan war.
The “Murph Challenge” has become a powerful symbol of courage and endurance, commemorating Murphy’s bravery and sacrifice. This grueling workout begins with a one-mile run, followed by 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, and 300 squats, before finishing with another one-mile run. Traditionally, participants wear a 20-pound weighted vest to increase the difficulty, though the gym allowed modifications to accommodate varying fitness levels among participants.
Driftless CrossFit’s event drew members of the local fitness community and military supporters who gathered not only to test their physical limits but also to reflect on the sacrifices made by service members like Murphy. The challenge encourages participants to push themselves, building mental toughness and resilience in honor of the fallen.
“We wanted to do something meaningful this Memorial Day,” said a representative of Driftless CrossFit. “The Murph Challenge is more than just a workout; it’s a way for us to connect with the legacy of those who gave everything for our country.”
The event was met with enthusiasm, and many participants expressed a deep sense of respect and gratitude throughout the workout. By hosting this challenge, Driftless CrossFit reinforces the importance of remembering veterans and fallen soldiers while promoting health, community, and perseverance.
Memorial Day serves as a solemn reminder of the cost of freedom, and events like this offer a unique way for civilians to engage actively in honoring those who have sacrificed their lives for the nation. Driftless CrossFit plans to make the Murph Challenge an annual tradition, continuing to bring the community together in tribute and solidarity.
