During National Women’s Health Week, the FDA has highlighted pelvic floor health as the central theme for 2025, aiming to raise awareness about this often overlooked but critical part of the body. Pelvic floor health significantly impacts women’s quality of life, especially since approximately one in four women will experience pelvic floor dysfunction at some point in their lives.
The pelvic floor consists of a group of muscles that support the pelvic organs. Experts point out that excessive pressure, overexertion, or poor posture can put strain on these muscles, leading to pelvic floor issues, such as pelvic pain, pressure, or bladder control problems.
Dr. Armani Zevyer, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Kaiser Permanente, explains that pelvic floor health is directly connected to a woman’s core functions, affecting the support of bones and internal organs, as well as the comfort of daily activities. She encourages women to seek medical help if they experience symptoms related to pelvic floor dysfunction, stating, “This is something women should not ignore, and there are solutions — starting with raising awareness and seeking help.”
