After a facial, your skin’s moisture levels are already a bit depleted from exfoliation and deep cleansing. Using soap right away can leave your skin feeling tight, dry, and irritated.

Can Cause Irritation: Your skin may be more sensitive immediately after a facial, and using soap with harsh chemicals or fragrances can cause irritation, redness, and even breakouts. Soap is often formulated with ingredients that are too harsh for freshly treated skin.

May Disrupt the Treatment: Facials often include the application of specialized serums, oils, and moisturizers that work to nourish and hydrate the skin. Washing your face with soap too soon after a facial can strip these beneficial products from your skin before they have had a chance to fully absorb and provide their intended benefits.

When Should You Wash Your Face After a Facial?

After a facial, it’s best to avoid washing your face for at least four to six hours. During this time, your skin is still absorbing the active ingredients from the products applied during the facial. Washing your face during this period may remove these beneficial products and hinder the full effects of the treatment.

If your face feels oily or sweaty, simply use a clean, soft cloth to blot away any excess oil or sweat. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing, as this can irritate the skin.

After 6–12 Hours: Gentle Cleansing

After the first six hours, you can start to gently cleanse your face, but it’s important to avoid using soap at this point. Soap can be too harsh and drying for freshly treated skin. Instead, opt for a gentle cleanser that’s formulated for sensitive skin. Look for products that are free from sulfates, fragrances, and alcohol. Some excellent options include:

  • Micellar water: A gentle cleanser that helps remove dirt and makeup without stripping the skin’s natural moisture.
  • Hydrating gel or cream cleansers: These provide moisture while cleansing, ensuring that your skin stays hydrated and protected.

After 24 Hours: Resume Your Regular Skincare Routine

After 24 hours, you can gradually return to your regular skincare routine, but again, avoid using soap immediately. If you prefer to use a soap-based cleanser, choose a mild, moisturizing soap that doesn’t contain harsh chemicals or fragrances.
