In an exclusive conversation with Indian Express, Jacqueline Fernandez opens up about her 16-year journey in Bollywood, revealing insights into her fitness routine, fashion philosophy, and the lessons she has learned along the way.

Crowned Miss Universe Sri Lanka in 2006, Fernandez made her Bollywood debut in 2009 with Aladin. Since then, she has built a remarkable career, featuring in blockbusters such as Housefull 2, Murder 2, Kick, Brothers, and Race 3. With 76 million followers on Instagram and a loyal fan base for her dance performances, she has become not just an actress but a fitness and fashion icon.

In this candid interview, Fernandez reflects on her career, approach to fitness, love for Sri Lankan food, and evolving sense of style.

From Pageant to Bollywood: A Dream Realized

For Fernandez, her career has been an ongoing journey of growth. “It’s been an incredible journey, truly a dream come true,” she shares. “Since childhood, I knew I wanted to be an actor. Pageantry came into my life later, inspired by amazing women like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. It helped open doors for me in the film industry.”

As she looks back, Fernandez emphasizes the lessons she’s learned over the years. “The biggest lessons have been about resilience, self-acceptance, and truly valuing myself. When you’re younger, you don’t always realize your worth, but as you grow, you learn to embrace yourself fully.”

Fashion and Acting: A Symbiotic Relationship

Fashion, for Fernandez, is not just about clothes; it’s a means of self-expression. “Fashion is a form of self-expression and creativity. It’s a way to communicate who you are without saying a word,” she explains. She adds that cinema and fashion go hand in hand. “When you play a role, you become part of a visual story. What you wear on screen can greatly impact how that character is perceived.”

As trends constantly evolve, Fernandez has shifted her style philosophy. “Earlier, I loved experimenting with fashion, but now I prefer styles that reflect my personality and comfort,” she says. “The key is authenticity—wearing what makes you feel confident rather than following trends blindly.”

A Balanced Approach to Fitness

In an industry where intense fitness regimens are often the norm, Fernandez has found a unique balance in her routine. “Fitness is no longer just about aesthetics—it’s become a deeply spiritual and mental practice,” she shares. “I train regularly, but it’s not about the number of hours; it’s about consistency and balance.”

Her fitness routine incorporates a variety of exercises, from strength training and yoga to dance, to keep things interesting and maintain motivation. “I believe in variety because it keeps me engaged and helps me stay motivated,” she says.

Mindful Eating with Room for Indulgence

When it comes to diet, Fernandez advocates a balanced approach. “I believe in maintaining a balanced lifestyle rather than following extreme diets,” she says. “Good nutrition, meditation, and self-care all play a role in keeping me energized.” She also enjoys indulging in her favorite comfort foods, particularly Sri Lankan cuisine. “Sri Lankan food is something I cherish—there’s nothing like a good home-cooked meal, especially lump rice,” she adds.

Skincare and Self-Care

Fernandez emphasizes that skincare is an extension of self-care. “For me, it’s about overall well-being. My skincare routine involves meditation, chanting, and stretching, which I feel contribute to my glow from within,” she says. “Beauty is about feeling good inside and out, and I truly believe that taking care of your mind and body reflects on your skin.”

As Fernandez continues to inspire fans both on and off the screen, her journey reflects the importance of self-acceptance, balance, and embracing one’s authentic self.
