Board Exams Near: Expert Offers Tips to Combat Stress and Anxiety

As the board exams approach, students across the country are bracing themselves for the pressure that comes with this crucial academic milestone. With the countdown to exams ticking away, it is essential for both students and parents to take proactive measures to manage the stress and anxiety that often accompany this period.

In an exclusive conversation with News9Live, Dr. Nikhil Nayar, a psychiatrist at Sharda Hospital, shared valuable insights on how parents can help their children maintain their mental well-being during the exam season.

Mental Health and Exam Preparation: The Balance

Dr. Nayar emphasized that approaching board exams should not feel any different from preparing for other tests. He advised students to avoid placing undue pressure on themselves or becoming overwhelmed by expectations, as such stress can hamper performance. Instead, he encouraged students to focus on consistent preparation and maintain a balanced routine.

“The key to performing well is perspective,” said Dr. Nayar. “Keep a regular schedule, ensure at least eight hours of sleep every night, and nourish your body with a healthy diet rich in fruits. Staying hydrated is equally important for staying alert and focused.”

He also stressed the importance of communication with family members, recommending that students speak to their parents or siblings if anxiety starts to feel overwhelming. Emotional support from loved ones can provide much-needed relief and help students put things into perspective.

Dr. Nayar further noted that staying consistent in one’s preparation is more valuable than worrying about outcomes. “Focus on the work at hand, avoid fixating on the result, and embrace steady, gradual progress.”

Expert-Recommended Tips to Reduce Stress and Anxiety

In addition to Dr. Nayar’s guidance, Dr. Abhinit Kumar, Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Sharda Hospital in Greater Noida, shared additional practical tips for students to manage stress and anxiety during this exam season.

1. Believe in Yourself

Confidence is the foundation of success. Dr. Kumar advised students to trust in their abilities, as self-belief is a powerful motivator. “Replace fear and doubt with determination. You’ve got this!”

2. Hard Work Pays Off

“There are no shortcuts,” Dr. Kumar explained. “The effort you invest today will shape your future. Keep revising, practice regularly, and maintain consistency in your studies. Every small step is progress.”

3. Stay Positive & Manage Stress

Dr. Kumar emphasized the importance of staying calm and maintaining a positive attitude. “Exams are tests of knowledge, not measures of your worth. Stay relaxed, breathe deeply, and approach your studies with optimism.”

4. Make a Plan

Organization is key. Dr. Kumar recommended creating a structured study schedule to stay on track and avoid last-minute cramming.

5. Practice Regularly

Dr. Kumar advised solving past papers and taking mock tests to simulate the exam environment. Regular practice can build confidence and improve time management skills.

6. Prioritize Health

A healthy mind thrives in a healthy body. Dr. Kumar highlighted the importance of maintaining physical well-being. “Get enough sleep, eat nutritious meals, and take breaks during study sessions. A fresh mind absorbs information better.”

7. Never Give Up

Dr. Kumar’s final piece of advice was to persevere despite challenges. “There will be moments of fatigue or frustration, but remember: every successful individual was once in your shoes. Keep pushing forward, and don’t lose faith in your abilities.”

Conclusion

Both Dr. Nayar and Dr. Kumar emphasized that while exams are significant, they should not be viewed as the ultimate determinant of success. The journey of preparation, growth, and perseverance is just as important, if not more so, than the final result.

“Exams are merely a stepping stone,” Dr. Kumar concluded. “Give your best, and no matter the outcome, you’ve already won by taking the challenge head-on.”

With these expert tips in mind, students and parents can work together to create a balanced, stress-free environment that prioritizes mental health, physical well-being, and academic success during this exam season.
