Joe Manganiello’s remarkable transformation into a chiseled werewolf in Hollywood is more than just special effects and makeup. His six-day workout routine, a rigorous and intense regimen, has helped him gain 15 pounds of muscle in just 8 weeks. From heavy weightlifting to high-intensity CrossFit-inspired exercises, Manganiello’s fitness approach is both demanding and impressive.

A Relentless Training Schedule

Manganiello’s training schedule is anything but conventional. He trains six days a week, embracing a level of commitment that few athletes or fitness enthusiasts are willing to match. “I train like I’m trying to win a gold medal in an Olympic event that doesn’t exist,” Manganiello explained, underscoring his dedication. His workout combines traditional weightlifting with CrossFit-style exercises, making for a comprehensive program that builds strength and improves overall conditioning.

Upper Body Strength: Chest and Back

The start of the week sees Manganiello focusing on his chest and back. Mondays and Thursdays are dedicated to building an imposing upper body through a series of supersets, which combine exercises like barbell bench presses and lateral pulldowns. This technique not only saves time but also maintains a high heart rate, ensuring that Manganiello builds muscle while burning fat.

Leg Development: The Foundation of Strength

Tuesdays and Fridays are reserved for leg day, a cornerstone of Manganiello’s supernatural physique. His leg workouts are rigorous and demanding, incorporating exercises such as front squats, weighted step-ups, and leg presses. “Leg day is like paying taxes,” he jokes. “It’s painful, but necessary.” These challenging routines are typically performed in supersets, pushing Manganiello to his limits.

Shoulders and Arms: Fine-Tuning a Superhuman Physique

Wednesdays and Saturdays are focused on shoulders and arms, critical areas for developing a superhero-like body. With exercises such as Arnold presses and hammer curls, Manganiello’s shoulder work is particularly important in creating the V-taper look that has become his signature. “Joe’s dedication to his shoulder work gives him that V-taper that’s become his trademark,” says his trainer, Ron Matthews.

The Role of CrossFit: Enhancing Functional Fitness

While weightlifting is a staple of Manganiello’s routine, he also incorporates CrossFit-style functional training to boost his athleticism. These high-intensity Workouts of the Day (WODs), such as “Helen” and “Grace,” push his cardiovascular endurance and improve his agility and explosiveness. The functional fitness approach mimics the agility and power Manganiello’s character displays in his supernatural roles.

Nutrition: Fueling the Transformation

To support such an intense workout schedule, Manganiello follows a strict high-protein, low-carb diet. “Eating right is a battle,” he admits, but it’s a battle he’s willing to face. His meals typically include lean meats, vegetables, and protein shakes, all designed to fuel muscle growth and enhance recovery between workouts.
