As we embrace the new year, many are still managing post-holiday expenses or committing to a low-buy lifestyle. However, beauty doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. From skincare to haircare, there are plenty of ways to nurture your beauty routine without spending a dime.

1. Utilize Steam for Hydration and Haircare

A quick, free solution to multiple beauty concerns, steam is an essential tool for anyone looking to enhance their look. If you have curly hair, the moisture from steam helps hydrate and add bounce. For added benefit, steam also helps hair masks penetrate deeper and opens pores, allowing face masks to work more effectively. As an added bonus, steam can even smooth out your party outfits. Consider standing in a steamy bathroom while using a hair mask and hanging your clothes nearby. It’s the perfect way to multitask your beauty and wardrobe prep.

2. Keep Pillowcases Clean

Regularly washing pillowcases, facecloths, and beauty tools is key to maintaining healthy skin. According to facialist Sherna Malone, washing makeup brushes and beauty blenders often prevents bacteria, oils, and makeup buildup that can lead to breakouts. Additionally, sleeping on your side or face-down can harm your skin, as your face constantly presses against the pillow. If possible, try sleeping on your back to give your skin a break. Quality sleep boosts cell regeneration, collagen production, and reduces inflammation, all contributing to a brighter complexion.

3. Wash Your Hands Frequently

While we’ve all learned the importance of hand hygiene since the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s easy to fall off the wagon. Proper handwashing is essential in keeping germs and bacteria from spreading, especially since we touch our faces frequently without realizing it. Be sure to wash your hands after touching common surfaces like doorknobs, phones, and keyboards, ensuring you’re not transferring harmful bacteria to your skin.

4. Incorporate Facial Massage Into Your Routine

A simple yet effective way to improve your skin’s radiance is by adding facial massage to your daily routine. Facialist Dawn Hill recommends incorporating gentle circular motions during your cleansing or nighttime skincare routine. This improves circulation, promotes lymphatic drainage, and relieves facial tension. Best of all, you don’t need expensive tools or products—your hands are the best tools for the job.

5. Stop Obsessing Over Magnifying Mirrors

It’s easy to get caught up in the details, but magnifying mirrors often lead to unnecessary stress and skin picking. According to Ultraceuticals National Trainer Michelle Ryan, obsessively examining your skin can cause you to squeeze blackheads or acne, which may worsen the situation by enlarging pores or pushing debris deeper into the skin. 6. Apply Skincare to Damp Skin
