As TikTok continues to serve as a hub for viral skincare trends, beauty enthusiasts often find themselves overwhelmed by the influx of new products and routines. With everything from light therapy masks to face rollers circulating online, it can be challenging to determine which hacks are effective and which are simply fleeting fads. To help consumers navigate this ever-changing landscape, beauty expert Maria Mukaranda from Cosmetify offers insights into the TikTok skincare trends that are truly worth incorporating into your routine.

Gua Sha: A Controversial Yet Popular Trend

Gua sha, a traditional Chinese medicine practice, has garnered significant attention on TikTok. This technique involves using a smooth-edged tool to scrape the skin, promoting circulation and lymphatic drainage. While Mukaranda acknowledges its potential to improve blood flow and reduce puffiness, she cautions that there is limited scientific evidence supporting its long-term benefits.

“Gua sha can temporarily give the face and body a more contoured look, but its effects are not permanent,” she explains. For those with sensitive skin, the technique may also cause irritation, making it important to approach with caution.

Coffee Eye Masks: A Caffeine-Powered Solution

Coffee eye masks have become a go-to solution for reducing dark circles and puffiness. The caffeine in these masks stimulates the skin, providing an energy boost similar to the effect of a cup of coffee. Mukaranda points out that these masks are rich in antioxidants, which help protect the skin from environmental stressors and aging.

“Coffee eye masks are a great way to refresh tired eyes, especially after a long night or early morning,” says Mukaranda. “They may be just what you need to get back on track after the holiday season.”

Body Brushing: A Traditional Approach to Skin Care

Another trend with roots in traditional Chinese medicine is body brushing. This involves using a dry natural-bristle brush to exfoliate the skin, purportedly improving circulation and reducing water retention. While Mukaranda acknowledges its exfoliation benefits, she emphasizes that there is insufficient evidence to confirm its role in reducing cellulite or draining the lymphatic system.

“Cellulite is largely influenced by genetics, hormones, and lifestyle, and body brushing isn’t a quick fix,” Mukaranda notes. “It’s more about embracing your body as it is, rather than trying to brush away imperfections.”

Light Therapy Masks: A Proven Treatment

In contrast to the mixed opinions surrounding other trends, light therapy masks have a solid foundation in scientific research. These masks emit red and blue light wavelengths, each targeting different skin concerns. Red light stimulates collagen production, improving skin elasticity, while blue light helps fight acne-causing bacteria.

“LED light therapy masks are backed by scientific evidence, making them a worthwhile investment for those committed to skincare,” says Mukaranda. “While some of these masks can be expensive, they’re proven to be effective for long-term use.”

Rice Water: A Budget-Friendly Beauty Staple

Rice water, popular in the hair care industry, has recently gained traction as a skincare treatment. This affordable solution, often used as a toner, is said to hydrate the skin and provide various benefits due to its high content of vitamins and minerals. Mukaranda suggests that while rice water can be a great addition to your skincare routine, results may vary from person to person.

TikTok has undoubtedly reshaped the beauty industry, making it easier than ever to discover new products and skincare routines. However, as with any trend, it’s essential to do thorough research and consult experts before committing to a new regimen. Mukaranda’s advice is clear: while some trends can be beneficial, others may not live up to the hype. By focusing on proven techniques like light therapy masks and carefully evaluating newer trends, you can make more informed decisions about your skincare routine.
