Gut Health Key to Longevity of World’s Oldest Woman

A recent study has revealed the secrets behind the longevity and health of María Branyas Morera, a Spanish woman who passed away last February at the age of 117, recognized as the oldest living person on Earth.

Researchers discovered that María’s cells appeared 17 years younger than her chronological age. Remarkably, her gut health was found to be exceptional—comparable to that of a healthy newborn. This was attributed to her lifelong adherence to a healthy diet.

The study, led by genetics professor Manel Esteller from the University of Barcelona, conducted an in-depth analysis of María’s genes and gut microbiota. It is considered one of the most comprehensive studies on individuals aged over 110.

A key finding highlighted María’s gut as being rich in beneficial bacteria called bifidobacteria, which help reduce chronic inflammation in the body.

Before her death, María shared some of her daily habits: consuming three cups of yogurt daily, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, taking daily walks, avoiding smoking and drinking, and maintaining strong social connections while avoiding toxic relationships.

The scientific community has long emphasized the crucial role of gut microbiota in supporting the immune system. Probiotics effectively inhibit harmful bacteria and maintain gut balance. Yogurt, a quality fermented food rich in live cultures, aids digestion, reduces inflammation, and may lower risks of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Nutritionist Rob Hobson explained that beneficial bacteria produce short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate, which reduce gut inflammation and protect the gastrointestinal lining. Regular exercise, such as daily walking, further promotes the growth of these good bacteria, enhancing gut function.

Even in old age, María remained mentally sharp and capable of interviews. She rarely fell ill, only experiencing minor issues like joint pain and hearing loss.

Notably, María contracted COVID-19 before vaccines became available in 2020 but showed no significant symptoms and recovered quickly.
