People often say never ask a woman her age, but actress Yamuna Srinidhi wears her age as a badge of honor.
This renowned Bharatanatyam dancer and critically acclaimed actress celebrated her 50th birthday this week, greeting the milestone with gratitude, grace, and a renewed sense of purpose, all in typical Yamuna style.
“I’ve been saying, ‘In 11 months, I will be 50,’ then ‘10 months, I will be 50.’ Now I can happily say, ‘Tomorrow I will be 50!’” Yamuna said with a smile in a candid conversation with ETimes.
Known for her fitness, discipline, creativity, and charity work, Yamuna has continuously inspired generations—not just through her performances on stage and screen but also through her grounded lifestyle and deep connection to Indian culture and values.
“No Changes at All”
When asked whether she plans to make any changes after entering this new chapter of her life, Yamuna quickly responded, “Absolutely not. I will continue to be the same—independent, grateful, disciplined, hardworking, setting new goals, and working towards them.”
She humorously added, “If there is one thing I need to be disciplined about, it’s my eating habits. I love sweets, chocolates, and ice cream. You’ll often find me indulging. That’s the only place where I need discipline!”
Strengths, Weaknesses, and Kindness
Yamuna is also not shy about discussing her weaknesses. “Kindness is both my strength and my weakness,” she reflected.
“I regret showing kindness to those who were ungrateful, but at the same time, my acts of kindness have touched many and brought me endless joy. I don’t want to change because of painful experiences. I was born kind and loving, and for that, I will always be grateful.”
Bringing Indian Classical Dance to the World
From being a dance teacher at 16 to an actress at 38, Yamuna is no stranger to reinventing herself. Her next goal is both ambitious and heartfelt.
“My achievements—National Award, three international awards, three Karnataka State Government Awards, various recognitions, 54 films, 18 major serials, and two web series—haven’t made me complacent. I seek greater challenges.”
So, what’s next?
“The most important question on my mind is, ‘What will I leave behind for the next generation? What is the future of Indian classical dance?’”
Yamuna is now focused on taking Indian classical dance to a higher level globally, especially in Western countries.
“I’m very lucky. My students are so dedicated that even after Rangapravesha, they continue to work tirelessly to preserve and promote Indian classical dance, which is quite rare in the U.S. My next significant goal is to work alongside my most talented and committed students to make this happen.”
Her Radiance Secret
Yamuna’s natural beauty and health are often a source of admiration. “I’m lucky I listened to my mother and grandmother, following their home remedies. I’m yet to see a single gray hair, thanks to them. I can proudly say I’ve never been to a beauty salon.”
Advice for Women at 50
Yamuna believes in aging gracefully and embracing the changes that life brings.
“Every phase of life has its beauty, and we should embrace it rather than deny it,” she says.
At this age, we experience the empty nest syndrome, the passing of elders, and the feeling of emptiness unless we focus on our own passions or careers. This is why staying connected is so important—with ourselves and with the world,” she adds.
“Empathy towards the vulnerable is key—the world needs more people helping each other. This is the best time for that because our responsibilities as mothers have lessened.”
No Lavish Celebrations, Only Service
So, how did she celebrate her 50th birthday? In her signature style—meaningful and simple.
“My birthday has never been a big deal for me. I believe in the value that age brings rather than celebrating it extravagantly,” Yamuna smiled.
“As always, I’ll celebrate this year through social activities. I believe the universe supports all my endeavors, and I feel extremely lucky because everything I do has received support and encouragement.”
She concluded with a heartfelt message: “I am deeply grateful to everyone who has played an important role in my life!”
Career Update
Yamuna recently received accolades for her stellar performance in Agnyathavasi. She is currently starring in the popular TV series Avanu Maththe Shravani, which has already aired over 500 episodes. She is also filming the big-budget Kannada film Halagali, adding another impressive accomplishment to her already illustrious career.
