In a significant step towards combating obesity among children, the Eva Sámano de López Mateos Children’s Hospital under the Michoacán Ministry of Health (SSM) has introduced the state’s pioneering Pediatric Metabolism, Nutrition, and Wellness Unit (UMANPe), aimed at curbing instances of obesity and excessive weight gain.
Headed by Elías Ibarra Torres, this dedicated unit sets a new standard, offering comprehensive care to children and adolescents through a multidisciplinary approach. The unit’s objective is to provide dignified treatment and care, ultimately reducing morbidity and mortality rates while aiding their seamless reintegration into the societal fabric.
Launched on August 21, the medical unit represents a proactive effort to prevent diseases that pose a threat to the health and lives of minors. Silva Chávez Gallegos, the director of the Children’s Hospital, highlighted the significance of this service in safeguarding the well-being of children.
Liliana Verenice Arroyo Cruz, the director of gastroenterology and nutrition at the Children’s Hospital and the driving force behind this project, underscored the severity of obesity as a leading cause of mortality, linked to afflictions such as diabetes, hypertension, liver cirrhosis, vascular issues, and depression, among others.
Arroyo Cruz stressed the necessity of adopting a multifaceted approach to address this issue. The unit plans to implement a long-term healthy model spanning from one to a maximum of three years. This holistic strategy encompasses modified dietary habits, personalized nutrition plans, psychological support, stress and anxiety management, home visits, and consistent patient follow-up.
By inaugurating the Pediatric Metabolism, Nutrition, and Wellness Unit, SSM is taking a critical stride towards combatting childhood obesity, promoting holistic health, and fostering a brighter future for young generations.
