Paddleboard Workouts: Fun, Fit, and Floating

As temperatures rise this summer, fitness enthusiasts are turning to a refreshing alternative to traditional gym workouts: paddleboard training. Combining balance, strength, and relaxation on water, this unique exercise is making waves in India’s fitness scene.

Pilates expert Kitty Kalra, who recently hosted a class blending Pilates, yoga, and meditation on paddleboards, explains, “This workout demands focus, balance, and a strong core. Even some of my fitness-savvy friends found it quite challenging.”

Paddleboard workouts take place on a floating board, which creates an unstable surface that intensifies the engagement of core muscles. Participants perform exercises such as planks and push-ups, which become more demanding due to the constant need for balance. The sessions typically conclude with calming breathing exercises and guided relaxation on the board.

“You have to maintain a tight core throughout, even when standing still,” says nutritionist and habit coach Apoorvi Sethi. “It requires steady control, like when you’re about to sneeze or pose for a photo. Patience and balance are essential.”

Why Paddleboard Training is Gaining Traction

Lifestyle coach Anvita Agarwal highlights the growing appeal of paddleboard workouts globally, noting that while it remains a novelty in India, interest is increasing, especially among those seeking a fun yet challenging exercise routine.

“Working out on water helps regulate body temperature, keeping you cool during intense sessions,” she says. “The instability of the board adds a core workout element to even simple moves, providing a full-body, joint-friendly exercise that’s perfect for hot and humid weather.”

Kitty Kalra echoes these sentiments: “The workout is tougher than it looks. Balance and core strength are crucial, and even seasoned fitness enthusiasts find it demanding. But it’s rewarding — a fun and refreshing way to stay active.”

Apoorvi Sethi advises beginners to expect some wobbling and occasional falls into the water. “That’s all part of the experience. Laugh it off and keep going. Everyone gets wet, but the workout makes you sweat for sure.”

How Paddleboard Workouts Differ From Traditional Exercise

  • Performed on a floating board in water, providing a cool environment

  • Continuous engagement of abdominal and core muscles

  • Reduced joint impact due to water buoyancy

  • Simultaneous activation of arms, legs, and core muscles

  • Improved balance and concentration

  • A blend of yoga, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), strength exercises, and breathing techniques

Tips for Beginners

Experts recommend starting with basic moves and practicing under certified instructors to ensure safety. Proper preparation includes applying waterproof sunscreen, staying hydrated, and wearing fitted, non-slip workout attire or comfortable swimwear. Clean and safe facilities are also important, says trainer Annu Marbaniang.

As India’s fitness community embraces this water-based workout, paddleboard training offers a refreshing, enjoyable alternative to the heat and monotony of gym routines.
