In April 2025, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cut funding and laid off the specialized eight-member team responsible for compiling and disseminating best practices on contraception. This team played a critical role in developing and updating the “U.S. Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use” guidelines. Although the existing guidelines remain accessible, the dissolution of the dedicated team means there is no longer a group responsible for integrating the latest scientific research and updating these recommendations—prompting alarm among many doctors and public health experts.
The team not only provided healthcare providers with evidence-based contraceptive advice grounded in the latest medical research, but also developed a mobile app downloaded over 440,000 times that helped clinicians quickly deliver personalized contraception guidance to patients. Physicians warn that without ongoing monitoring and updates, the guidelines risk becoming outdated, potentially compromising patient safety.
This loss is especially critical for patients with complex conditions like sickle cell disease, for whom contraceptive choices can be life-impacting. The CDC team’s recent guidelines included important revisions for these high-risk patients, enabling clinicians to avoid dangerous complications. Both patients and doctors express concern that dismantling the team undermines evidence-based medical support and jeopardizes women’s reproductive health rights.
Furthermore, as access to legal abortion becomes increasingly restricted in many states, reliable scientific guidance on contraception grows even more vital. Doctors warn that women’s bodily autonomy is under mounting pressure, and losing authoritative contraceptive recommendations could exacerbate health risks.
Public health experts and clinicians are calling for renewed investment in women’s health research, with particular emphasis on contraception science, to ensure women continue to receive timely, accurate, and personalized reproductive healthcare, safeguarding their health and rights.
