Six Habits Heart Surgeons Avoid for Their Own Heart Health

Dr. Jeremy London Shares Key Strategies to Maintain Heart Health. As a board-certified cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Jeremy London has witnessed the devastating effects of heart disease, which remains the leading cause of death globally. Practicing in Savannah, Georgia, he specializes in repairing damaged hearts, performing bypass surgeries, and helping patients navigate the complex realities of heart health.

Dr. London emphasizes that many heart-related issues are not sudden but rather the result of chronic unhealthy habits. In light of this, he shares a list titled “Things I Avoid as a Heart Surgeon” on his Instagram, highlighting six specific habits he believes are crucial for maintaining his own heart health.

1. Alcohol-Based Mouthwash

One surprising habit Dr. London avoids is using alcohol-based mouthwash. While these products promise to eliminate germs, they can adversely affect blood pressure by disrupting the oral microbiome. Good bacteria in the mouth are essential for producing nitric oxide, a compound that helps dilate blood vessels. Regular use of antibacterial mouthwash can kill beneficial bacteria, leading to increased blood pressure. Research indicates a clear link between antiseptic mouthwash and elevated hypertension risks, prompting Dr. London to recommend alcohol-free, alkaline mouthwash alternatives.

2. Smoking and Vaping

Dr. London is unequivocal in his stance against smoking, labeling it “the single worst thing you can do for yourself.” Smoking damages blood vessel linings and elevates the risks of heart attacks and strokes. Nicotine, a component of both cigarettes and e-cigarettes, constricts blood vessels, leading to higher blood pressure. Studies indicate that vaping can also cause significant heart and blood vessel function changes, increasing the likelihood of heart failure.

3. Alcohol Consumption

Three years ago, Dr. London eliminated alcohol from his life and has since felt substantial improvements in his well-being. He argues that alcohol is “toxic to every cell in your body” and likens its dangers to those of cigarette smoking. While some studies suggest moderate alcohol consumption might be heart-healthy, Dr. London strongly disagrees, asserting that any amount of alcohol is a harmful choice. He advises individuals to consider their own choices but stresses the potential risks associated with alcohol.

4. Soft Drinks

Dr. London refers to soft drinks as “liquid death,” citing their detrimental effects on health. Although he acknowledges that his description might be extreme, he believes soft drinks contribute to significant health issues due to their high-calorie content and sugar levels. A 2024 study linked daily consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages to increased cardiovascular disease risk, prompting Dr. London to recommend water and tea as healthier alternatives.

5. Refined Flour Foods

While Dr. London does not oppose bread and pasta, he emphasizes the importance of choosing whole grain options over those made with refined white flour. Refined flours lack dietary fiber, iron, and essential vitamins, making them less beneficial for heart health. The American Heart Association highlights the advantages of dietary fiber in whole grains, which can help lower cholesterol and reduce heart disease risk.

6. Ultra-Processed Foods

Dr. London urges people to limit their intake of ultra-processed foods, such as chips, cookies, and other prepackaged snacks high in added sugars, unhealthy fats, and preservatives. Research published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology has associated high consumption of these foods with increased cardiovascular disease and mortality risk. Dr. London advocates for a diet rich in “God-made, not man-made” foods, recommending one-ingredient, nutrient-dense options like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and eggs.

Dr. London’s commitment to maintaining heart health serves as a reminder of the importance of diet and lifestyle choices in preventing heart disease. Following these guidelines can help individuals reduce their risks and promote overall cardiovascular well-being.
