A recent investigation by the non – toxic pioneer environmental organization shows that 100% of the 55 sets of whitening products they sent for inspection exceeded the mercury standard, with the highest exceeding by 6,399 times.
Consumers have reported skin allergies after using a certain “handmade body whitening lotion” and were diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis. It is found that similar situations are not isolated cases, and there are problems such as “three – no” products and excessive mercury content in whitening products on the market. Mercury can be absorbed through the skin and cause poisoning, affect kidney function, and lead to neurological diseases if people use whitening products with excessive mercury for a long time.
After verification by a third – party testing agency, the mercury content of one product reached 1,100mg/kg, while according to the Cosmetic Safety Technical Specification (2015 Edition), the standard mercury content in cosmetics should not exceed 1mg/kg. The non – toxic pioneer organization selected 55 sets of whitening cosmetics (a total of 109 samples) from various platforms for mercury content determination. The results showed that 108 out of 109 samples exceeded the mercury limit in the Cosmetic Safety Technical Specification.
Experts suggest that consumers can do daily sunscreen care to prevent skin darkening caused by pigmentation due to ultraviolet radiation. Before buying whitening products, they can check the registration number/filing number on the official website of the National Medical Products Administration to see if it is true and valid.
