The approaching summer vacation is coinciding with a concerning rise in global measles infection rates, prompting warnings to families worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that there were 10.3 million cases of measles globally in 2023, a 20% increase from 2022.
This surge is mainly attributed to inadequate immunization coverage globally. With increased international travel during the summer holidays, the risk of measles spread is further exacerbated. Measles is a highly contagious viral disease, and those infected can easily transmit the virus to others through coughing and sneezing.
To protect their families, especially children, families are advised to ensure that all members are up – to – date on their measles vaccinations, follow good hygiene practices, and stay informed about measles – affected areas before traveling.
