Washington, DC, August 20, 2024 — The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is making strides in strengthening Essential Public Health Functions (EPHF) across Bolivia, Colombia, and Honduras through targeted technical activities. These initiatives are part of PAHO’s broader commitment to fortifying health systems throughout the Americas, ensuring equitable access to quality health services.
In Honduras, the Renewed EPHF Assessment Process was launched, marking a critical step in evaluating and enhancing public health functions. The event saw participation from key figures, including Minister of Health Carla Paredes and PAHO/WHO Representative in Honduras, Emilia Solís Ortega. This phase is designed to raise awareness among both internal and external stakeholders in the health sector, aiming to align criteria and objectives for a comprehensive assessment. The process is being spearheaded by the National Health Authority, which has established a governance framework that brings together strategic technical and political stakeholders to guide the evaluation.
Bolivia hosted a national event in Chuquisaca, organized by the Public Health Society, where over 250 health professionals gathered to discuss the Renewed EPHF. During this event, Ernesto Báscolo, head of PAHO’s Primary Health Care and Integrated Service Delivery Unit, presented key guidelines and the historical evolution of essential public health functions. He highlighted the progress made in the renewal process, while PAHO consultant Raúl Pitarque provided an in-depth analysis of each EPHF, emphasizing the crucial role of health authorities and agents in their implementation across the Region. Participants were also encouraged to continue their education through PAHO’s Virtual Campus, which offers an Introductory EPHF Course specifically designed for university students.
In Colombia, the Introductory EPHF Course was incorporated into the Territorial Health Management Training Program, targeting experts and authorities. The course, attended by 350 health secretaries and officials, focused on bolstering the renewed EPHF. It was delivered online and concluded with a synchronous session featuring national and PAHO authorities, underscoring the Health Secretariats’ role in fostering an integrated and equitable health system. The course remains accessible through the Virtual Campus of Public Health.
Looking ahead, Bolivia and Colombia will continue to promote EPHF training, particularly at the university level, to prepare the next generation of health professionals. Meanwhile, in Honduras, the initial phase of the assessment process will be completed, encompassing a gap analysis and the formulation of an action plan to address identified needs.
These efforts underscore PAHO’s ongoing dedication to supporting Member States in their quest to improve public health functions and ensure that all citizens have access to essential health services.
