Rotherham United Manager Matt Taylor Gives Update on Midfielder Christ Tiehi’s Fitness Ahead of EFL Cup Clash with Stoke City

In the wake of Saturday’s intense match, Rotherham United’s pivotal midfielder, Christ Tiehi, left the field due to cramp after a wholehearted effort that contributed to an unfortunate 2-1 home defeat. As the team prepares for Tuesday night’s EFL Cup fixture against Stoke City, Tiehi’s fitness status is under evaluation.

Matt Taylor, the head of the Rotherham United squad, shed light on Tiehi’s condition, stating, “He has experienced cramps twice now. He has given his all without holding back. There’s a rationale behind the gradual progression in pre-season, starting with 45 minutes, then 60, and subsequently 70 minutes. However, he played 65 and 75 minutes right away in a demanding match.”

Taylor further elaborated on the situation, sharing, “We are hopeful that he hasn’t strained any muscles. He is feeling discomfort in several areas of his body. His departure from the pitch was a significant moment; it was evident to all why we brought him to this club. His speed matches opponents’ attacks, and he controls the central part of the field.”

With Tiehi’s absence, the team’s core strength diminished, impacting their ability to regain control of the ball. Taylor noted the players’ spirited effort, remarking, “Despite that, the players exerted themselves to the maximum. I only wish I could provide them with more assistance.”

Taylor, acknowledging his team’s recent performance, remarked, “We are progressively aligning with the style of play I envision. It’s a positive sign that we are competing against formidable teams and delivering commendable performances. Now, our focus is on engaging in these challenges and accumulating points.”

As the 2023-24 season kicks off, Rotherham United has secured only one point from a potential 12, enduring three losses. Taylor emphasized the need to bridge the gap between their improved gameplay and point acquisition, stating, “Our strides in tactical execution must translate into better results. While facing strong adversaries, let’s not only put up a fight but also secure valuable points.”
